Key findings

11% of the respondents say they have felt discriminated against in the past 12 months. This amounts to more than 1.6 million people. About 20% of people with origins outside the Netherlands have felt discriminated against in the past 12 months felt discriminated against compared to 7% of people with a Dutch origin. More than one in three respondents (39%) who felt discriminated against in the past 12 months say this was because of their race. The differences in experienced discrimination by religion or belief are relatively big. In terms of religion, 27% of Muslims feel discriminated against, 25% of Hindus and 24% of Jews. This is almost three times as often as Roman Catholics (9%) and Protestants or believers of another other Christian church (9%).

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

In this report Statistics Netherlands published its finding about discrimination from the 14th edition of The Netherlands’ Safety Monitor (Veiligheidsmonitor). This monitor monitors the attitudes and experiences of the general population of the Netherlands regarding habitability and safety of the neighbourhood, fear and prevention of crime, victimisation and the attitudes towards the police and municipality. The 14th edition of this monitor is based on a survey asking respondents whether they had felt discriminated against in the past 12 months.

Sample details and representativeness

Survey conducted among 182,218 residents of the Netherlands of 15 years and older in the period 9 August 2023 – 31 October 2023.
