Key findings

In 2023, compared to 2022, there was an 8.8% decrease in initiated criminal prosecutions for extremist crimes, from 107 to 95. The most numerous extremist crimes in the monitored period were crimes of expressing sympathy for a movement aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms, and crimes of spreading extremist material. Right-wing extremism remains the most dominant form of extremism in the Slovak Republic. There was also an increase in xenophobic hate speech targeting migrants, especially from Syria. The far-right scene presented the influx of migrants as a failure of the security forces of the Slovak Republic and European institutions, calling for the restoration of state borders and even the exit of the Slovak Republic from the EU. These expressions were not limited to online criticism; public protests were also organized, including recruitment into a paramilitary group aimed at protecting the borders of the Slovak Republic, thus substituting state security forces.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

The monitoring report provides an analysis and trends in the development of radicalisation and extremism in 2022 and 2023. The purpose of the monitoring report is to periodically inform the public about the state and trends in the development of extremism in the Slovak Republic and related extremist radicalisation. The report does not provide comprehensive statistics on various incidents or manifestations of extremism, rather it focuses on a qualitative assessment of trends and developments.
