Key findings
In 2022, the Documentation Centre recorded 1324 racist attacks against Muslims and people perceived as Muslim, comprising 244 offline and 1080 online incidents. The Documentation Centre points out that the statistics presented represent a snapshot and help to highlight trends in Austria. The number of actual assaults is assumed to be much higher. Most online offences are categorised as spreading hate (92%) and incitement to hatred (5%). As in the previous year, a particular correlation was observed between political events and verbal violence on the internet.
