Key findings
Of the studied motives for hate-motivated violence, racism is the most common. In 2008-2023, 9% of victims of violence stated that they believed the violence was definitely motivated by racism. This corresponds to 5,000-6,000 people aged 16-74 [16-79 in 2023] experiencing racially motivated violence annually. The second most common cause of hate-motivated violence is the victim's religious beliefs. In 2020-2023, 6% of the surveyed victims report that they believe the violence was definitely motivated by it. The same proportion state that the violence was perhaps motivated by this.
Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)
Quantitative questionnaire conducted yearly. As the numbers are subject to uncertainty as a result of very few respondents, percentages are calculated on the basis of the last three years of questionnaires (for this survey, the results are calculated on the basis of 2020-2023 answers).
Sample details and representativeness
In this study, the lower age limit is 16 years and the upper age limit is 79 years. In addition, it is almost always only a small sample of the population covered by the survey that is being questioned. This means that the figures are subject to statistical sampling uncertainty. In 2023, the net sample amounted to 29,871 people while in 2022, it was 27,867 and for 2021, it was 25,687. In 2023, 13,698 people answered questions about exposure to violence and other forms of crime. In 2023, the majority of victim survey respondents answered through an online questionnaire. As in previous years, the people included in the survey are randomly selected via Statistics Denmark's CPR-register so that they constitute an intended representative sample of the population.
