Key findings

Despite positive governmental efforts, significant gaps persist in infrastructure and support systems necessary for effective integration. The study highlights deficiencies in English as an Additional Language (EAL) provisions, cultural and linguistic barriers, and the exacerbation of educational disparities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report provides an in-depth understanding of the refugees' experiences, from their displacement from Syria to their resettlement in Donegal, Ireland. The study emphasises the need for enhanced educational support and infrastructure to bridge the existing education gap and facilitate the successful integration of refugees into Irish society.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

The research employs an ethnographic methodology, combining quantitative data from refugee surveys with qualitative insights from interviews conducted with headteachers, teachers, integration officers, interpreters, volunteers, and other stakeholders directly involved with refugees.

Sample details and representativeness

Fifteen one-on-one semi structured interviews were carried out with a wide variety of candidates who are refugees, staff or volunteers that are associated and familiar with the refugee experience. All candidates are based in Co. Donegal except one, who is a Direct Provision staff member in Co. Meath. 7 work in education, 3 in integration support, and 2 are community volunteers.
