Key findings
The survey reveals a heterogeneous national reality in terms of the ethnic-racial identifications adopted by individuals. Estimates suggest that 1.2 million adults living in Portugal do not self-identify as white (or identify with ethnicities other than white), representing around 16 per cent of the population. Of these, 262.3 thousand people reported having a mixed origin or belonging, 169.2 thousand self-identified as black, 56.6 thousand as Asian and 47.5 thousand as Roma. The survey reveals ethnic-racial inequalities in terms of education, employment status, housing and experience of discrimination. The adult population in Portugal that identifies itself as Roma or black suffers around 4 and 3 times more discrimination, respectively, than the population that identifies itself as white.
Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)
The survey was carried out through three interview modes, with computer support: web, telephone and in person.
Sample details and representativeness
Data collection took place from January to June 2023 throughout the national territory. To respond to this survey, 35035 dwellings covering the entire national territory were selected, following a random procedure. Only one person per dwelling responded, aged between 18 and 74, being selected the last person who celebrated birthday (at the date of the interview).
