Key findings

The number of police reports in 2022 in which one or more hate crime motives could be identified amounted to 2,695. In several reports, more than one hate crime motive was identified, resulting in a total of 2,834 identified hate crime motives. Overall, the most common hate crime motives were xenophobic and racist hate crimes (53 percent), followed by hate crimes against religious groups (16 percent). Among hate crimes against religious groups, "Islamophobic" hate crimes were the most common, accounting for 8 percent of all hate crime motives. About half (52 percent) of all hate crimes against religious groups had an "Islamophobic" motive. Among the "Islamophobic" hate crimes, the most common type of crime was harassment (34 percent). The second most common type of crime was agitation against a population group (19 percent).
