Prisons Regulations, Subsidiary Legislation 260.03The prison medical service shall provide for specialised services from among those available without charge to the community outside prison for diagnosis and in proper cases, the treatment of any illness, whether physical or mental, or of drug abuse or addiction. It is the responsibility of the Medical Officer to make use of such services whenever advisable Sick prisoners who, in the opinion of the medical practitioner in charge, need treatment outside prison shall be transferred to a specialised institution or to a general hospital, as the case may require, subject to the provisions of any law relating to mental health and to admission to a mental institution. The Medical Services of the prison shall seek to detect and treat any physical or mental illness or defect or drug-related condition which may affect a prisoner’s wellbeing in prison, or which may impact a prisoner’s re-settlement after release.
