Prison Rules 2007 | Anyone who commits an act of violence against a prisoner – be it another prisoner or a Prison Officer – commits an offence that can result in a criminal prosecution. In addition, the Prison Rules indicate that each prison cell “shall be fitted with a mechanism by which a prisoner locked inside may attract the attention of a prison officer and such mechanism shall be capable of being operated by such a prisoner at all times”. The Rules prohibit individual prison officers from imposing punishment on prisoners without authorisation. Any allegation from a prisoner as to an incident that might
constitute a criminal offence be reported to the Governor and the Gardaí. |
