Exploration of the impact of the terrorist attacks on racism, islamophobia in Belgium. Using the files of complaints received between 2010 – 2017, the quantitative analysis reveals an increase in numbers of complaints following the terrorist attacks from 2015 onwards. The qualitative analysis of the files from 2015-2017 identify 6 themes that are the main cause for the complaints received: insults in public, employment, training and education; imposition of security orders that lead to refusal or withdrawal of residence permits/visas; closure of bank accounts; presumption of radicalisation.

Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the complaint files of the national equality body UNIA between 2010-2017.

Sample details and representativeness

111 complaints received from 2010 –2017. The sample refers only to files where the individual victim has been identified or is identifiable. Therefore, files related to hate crime or incitement of hatred on the internet are not included.
