Key findings

In 2017, the police introduced a new recording practice in the effort to acquire more accurate data on hate crimes. From 274 cases filed in 2016, the number went up to 446 cases in 2017. Subdivided by motivation, the statistics show that 50 % of all filed hate crimes were racially motivated, 32 % were religiously motivated, while 18 % were motivated by sexual orientation. Almost all racially motivated hate crimes were aimed at victims with ethnic minority background or coloured skin (97 %). About half of all hate crimes motivated by religion was aimed at Muslims (47 %). Inspite of more accurate data, there is still a sizeable dark figure of hate crimes in Denmark, the report concludes.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

other: quantitative descriptive design

Sample details and representativeness

the report is based on descriptive statistics on cases filed as hate crimes in 'POLSAS' - the national police case management system. Due to changes in the way hate crimes are recoded by the National police, data before 2017 is incomparable with data from after 2017 .
