Key findings
In 2018, the Czech Police recorded eight crimes motivated by hatred towards Muslims, which is an increase compared to 2017 (three registered cases). In 2018 the Police recorded seven crimes motivated by hatred against Arabs (two registered cases in 2017). Hate speech, which previously targeted Roma in particular, partially shifted towards Muslims, migrants as well as persons supporting them.
In 2018, criminal proceedings with Jaroslav Balda, who has a Czech ethnic background and who cut trees on railway tracks in Central Bohemia in two cases were carried out. He attributed these acts to alleged Islamist terrorists with the aim to influence public opinion against the Muslim community. The perpetrator was a very active supporter of the party Svoboda a přímá demokracie (Liberty and Direct Democracy), represented in the Czech as well as European Parliament, which represents socially conservative agenda and calls for the rejection of "multiculturalist ideology which is a tool of islamisation" (https://www.spd.cz/program).
