Key findings

The National Report concluded that there were 1,598 Hate crimes and incidents cases recorded by the national security forces in 2018. Although it does not include a specific reference to Anti-Muslim hatred, it does registered 426 cases (26,7%) based on racism and xenophobia and 69 cases (4,3%) based on religious beliefs or religious practices and the 596 cases (37,3%) based on ideology.
In comparison other relevant grounds reflected are Anti-Semitism 9 cases (0,56%) and 25 cases (1,56%) based on People with Disabilities and 259 cases (16,20%) based on the Sexual orientation and gender identity.
The cases based on "ideology" increased by 33.6%, compared to 2017. In the case of "racism/xenophobia" incidents, the increase was of a 1.3%.

Sample details and representativeness

The data were obtained through the Crime Statistics System (statistical system of criminality (SEC)). For its computation takes into account the facts that have being acknowledge by the following police corps: Guardia Civil, the National Police, the independent police of the different autonomous communities (Ertzaintza and Mossos d'esquadra and Policía Foral de Navarra) as well as the Local Police groups. It was complemented with the "Survey on Experiences with Hate Crime Incidents", which was active from 15 March to 31 December 2017 on the website of the Ministry of the Interior. 191 participants participated: university studies (47.2%), Spanish nationality (75.9%), between the ages of 26 to 40 (38.7%), resident in the provinces of Madrid, Barcelona and Murcia, and with employment status as an employee (53.9%)
