Key findings

Complaints submitted to the Ombudsman in 2019 represent a 30% increase over the previous year, the largest rise since 2016 when the Department of Equal Treatment was activated. Out of 1,176 new complaints submitted in 2019, 1% was related to discrimination based on religion and religious belief. Discrimination based on grounds of national or ethnic origin was reported in 3% of the new cases and 2% concerned discrimination based on race or colour. The report highlights the Ombudsman's intervention in a case of a nursing student who was not permitted to wear a veil during her training at a public hospital - a case documented as discrimination based on grounds of religious beliefs.
