Key findings
The report differentiates between anti-Islam-hatred, referring to negative assumptions and prejudices towards the religion, and anti-Muslim hatred, addressing negative attitudes towards Muslim persons. It finds that Muslims are primarily associated with a lack of integrational skills, while the Islam is associated with violence and backwardness. However, anti-Islam and anti-Muslim attitudes overlap and thus, negative, generalising discussion on the Islam cannot be analysed separately from the members of the religion. A large part of the non-Muslim study sample reported anti-Muslim attitudes, such as not wanting to live in a neighbourhood with many Muslims (58%) or not sending their children to a school were a teacher wearing hijab would teach (40%). At the same time, the study found an awareness of anti-Muslim sentiments and differentiating attitudes among the studied population (e.g. 85% being aware of the fact that single actions are often ascribed to the whole group of Muslims).
Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)
Quantitative (survey data using online questionnaires)
Sample details and representativeness
Data was gathered in the context of a larger data collection. For the purpose of this monitor, 1.912 non-Muslim interviewees from an online-access panel responded to the questionnaires.
