Key findings
In 2022, the police recorded a total of 1,245 offences classified as suspected hate crimes. The figure is 21% higher than in 2021, so the trend is increasing. However, the number of hate crime reports relating to religion or conviction decreased by 9%, from 133 in 2021 to 121 in 2022. Islam or Muslim individuals were targeted in 60 cases, which is five more than in the previous year. Most of these reports (43) were related to verbal insults, threats and harassment. Most common location for the suspected hate crimes based on religion or belief was the internet.
Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)
The statistics are based on crime reports screened out from the National Police Information System using hate crimes related search terms. All identified reports are read and classified based on the information found in the reports. For example, a case is considered a hate crime, when the victim, the police or a witness has expressed a suspicion of a potential hate motive behind the crime.
