Key findings
The association Vox carries out on a yearly basis a mapping activity of hate speech spread via social networks and websites. The mapping is carried out with the cooperation of some important Italian universities. The resulting maps focus on diverse hate and discrimination grounds. The 2023 version of the intolerance map also includes a specific map on hate speech episodes targeting the Muslim community. The map further reports the most common stereotypes and perceptions of the websites' and social networks' users. During the course of 2022, the association mapped 629,151 Tweets, 855 concerning the Muslim community: 854 conveyed a negative and derogatory image of Islam. Keywords used for the mapping included: terrorist, criminal, Taliban. Most of the Tweets were posted in relation to international terrorist events. The cities where most of these Tweets were published are Bologna, Turin, Rome.
