Penitentiary CodePost release integration and adaptation of ex-prisoners to their social, professional and family environment are tasks assigned to EPANODOS (which means return), a non-profit private law legal entity, supervised by the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection. This after-care structure is located in Athens and is staffed by volunteers and affiliated collaborators, who cooperate with prison social services and offer counselling, vocational training, minimal financial support and short-term housing, to facilitate any efforts towards the social reintegration of prisoners and former prisoners. It is the first, as well as the sole, official agency providing ex-prisoners with “after-care” services to be established in Greece.
General Regulation on Detention Facilities, Code on the Enforcement of Custodial Sentences and MeasuresEach detention facility organises educational and vocational training programmes for small groups of prisoners, in cooperation with specialised training centres, under the supervision of the social work department, the sociologist and the education consultant of the facility.
Internal Regulation for the Operation of Prison FacilitiesThere are several work opportunities for inmates of prisons. Prisoners are employed in auxiliary work or services which meet the operational needs of the detention facility and other public buildings or spaces, such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, cleaning or transporting food, and gardening services.
