FRA and EIGE conducted the European Union gender-based violence survey (EU-GBV survey) in eight EU Member States – Cyprus, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Romania and Sweden. The EU-GBV survey was developed by Eurostat and the national statistical authorities, in consultation with various experts and organisations, including FRA and EIGE. Member States’ statistical authorities implemented the survey on a voluntary basis in 2020–2023. In eight countries, the national statistical authorities were not available to conduct the survey, which led to FRA and EIGE to carry out the data collection in these countries. In addition, the Italian statistical institute ISTAT did not conduct the EU-GBV survey but instead supplied Eurostat with comparable data on selected indicators based on ISTAT’s national surveys related to gender-based violence and security.
This report describes the measures taken to carry out the survey, which resulted in a final dataset of 15,447 interviews across the eight survey countries. The EU-27 aggregate results of the EU-GBV survey on women’s experiences are based on 114,023 interviews in total. The survey implementation and selected fieldwork outcomes have also been summarised in the annexes of the results reports published in 2024 and 2026.
