Fundamental Rights Dialogue, 7 May 2022 in Paris - highlights

On 7 May 2022, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) organised the fourth Fundamental Rights Dialogue – a live debate that gives young people an opportunity to voice their fundamental rights concerns and to discuss ways to solve them.

Transcript

Michael O’Flaherty, Director, FRA:

Young people have fantastic ideas about how we can fix our continent and how we can go forward based on justice and equality.

Elsa Grangier, Moderator:

What does youth tell you their main concerns are in terms of fundamental rights?

Participant:

We have questions on how we can make improvements in terms of the environment, in terms of gender equality, the rights of children detained in camps in Syria.

Michael O’Flaherty, Director, FRA:

The particular experiences of women in terms of respecting their human rights must be at the centre of every conversation about human rights.

Participant:

And we were wondering how we can concretely ensure equal access to education for young people in Europe.

Jérôme Quéré, Mouvement Européen, France:

The youth is very concerned about the environment. It's a fundamental right in the EU. We often forget, but we have the right to a healthy environment.

Bénédicte Charrier, CNAJEP/Coexister France:

Whether it's the environment, women's rights, the rights of people who are discriminated against - everything is related. And as long as we don't admit that these subjects are inherently linked, we will never deal with the underlying issues.

Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, Member of the European Parliament:

So, today we really have to oblige social media platforms to be transparent on how they choose to promote information or not, and secondly, we have to regulate a lot more.

Michael O’Flaherty, Director, FRA:

There was one clear message right through the conversation this morning, and that's one you captured very well, about the need to listen to each other so much more.

Bénédicte Charrier, CNAJEP/Coexister France:

Engage yourself 100% and don't give up. Especially because... yes, it's complicated, it's exhausting, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but believe me, in the field, things are moving and they won't move without us.
