FRA discusses monitoring with European National Preventive Mechanisms

On 9 April, FRA addressed a Council of Europe workshop of the European National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs) Forum. FRA presented its guidance on Monitoring fundamental rights during screening and the asylum border procedure.

The workshop focused on monitoring in the context of migration.

The workshop included a session where working groups discussed three specific challenges relating to monitoring under the EU’s Migration and Asylum pact. They were how to monitor fundamental rights when using large-scale IT systems during screening, how to monitor asylum border procedures and how to monitor fundamental rights compliance during screening.

The outcome of these discussions will feed into the development of methodological guidance which FRA is currently drafting.

During the meeting, FRA also discussed with participants a compilation of monitoring that NPMs and other statutory human rights actors are already carrying out at borders or in locations which in future may host people subject to screening.
