Brussels airport training on fundamental rights and the use of biometrics

FRA delivered training on fundamental rights and the use of biometrics at a Frontex organised training event on vulnerabilities in automated border crossings at Brussels airport. Participants included representatives from EU Member States and Schengen-associated countries.

The training involved practical testing of automated border gates and self‑service systems, and the exchange of experiences on the operation of the Entry/Exit System (EES).

The training took place on 20 and 21 October.

Since 10 April 2026, Member States must use the EES, an EU digital system recording entry, exit, of third-country nationals by collecting their fingerprints and facial images at all external Border Crossing Points.

FRA underlined the need to operate the EES in a fundamental‑rights‑compliant manner, emphasising human dignity, data protection and privacy, and the best interests of the child, following its guidance for EES managers and for border guards issued in 2025.

FRA also presented key findings of the July 2026 Migration Bulletin, which included a chapter on the EES.
