The handbook serves as a practical reference for lawyers, judges, prosecutors, immigration officials, border guards, NGOs and other professionals who may encounter legal questions relating to asylum, borders and immigration.
Published jointly by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), the fourth edition of the handbook has been updated to June 2026. It brings together key EU legislation and case law from the Court of Justice of the European Union and the ECtHR, reflecting important developments since the previous edition in 2020, including the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The 2026 edition also includes a new chapter on monitoring fundamental rights compliance and investigating rights violations.
It presents EU law and Council of Europe standards, including ECtHR case law together, allowing readers to see where the two European legal systems converge and where they differ.
The updated handbook now is available in Greek and English, with further language versions to follow.
