Community of practice on protecting human rights defenders meets

FRA contributed to the second meeting of the Community of Practice on Protection for human rights defenders (HRDs) in Europe. This network is one of the actions outlined in the EU Strategy for Civil Society.

The network is coordinated by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office for Europe, together with a facilitators group that FRA is part of. It aims at providing a dedicated platform for engagement and collaboration among organisations and stakeholders committed to the protection of human rights defenders and activists in Europe.

The online meeting on 9 September brought together over 70 organisations, including civil society, national human rights institutions and their European network ENNHRI, as well as EU, international, multilateral, and regional organisations, and donors.

The Community focuses on five thematic priorities: Permanent coordination to enhance protection interventions, expanding mobility pathways and strengthening protection after relocation, better understanding and addressing transnational repression, addressing criminalisation and other legal threats, and improving responses and resilience to digital threats.

This meeting focused on the priorities of coordination, criminalisation and digital threats.
