On 16 September, FRA delivered an online keynote speech at the European Association for Biometrics Darmstadt Biometrics Week 2026 on the fundamental rights implications of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES).
The EES is a large-scale EU IT system that replaces passport stamping by electronically recording the entries and exits of short-stay non-EU nationals, including biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints.
In the presentation, FRA explained how the system can support border management while highlighting the importance of protecting privacy and personal data, ensuring the dignified collection of biometric data, providing accessible information to travellers, and addressing the needs of children, older persons and persons with disabilities.
FRA also presented the agency's research and practical guidance to support the fundamental rights-compliant implementation of the EES across the EU.
