What’s happening to fundamental rights in the EU?
They’re being challenged by multiple threats.
Democracy is being tested.
Free and fair elections are threatened by disinformation, AI and harmful rhetoric.
Women face danger every day. 1 in 3 women experience violence and threats
Migrants continue to suffer. Many still experience human rights violations at the EU borders. Over 3,500 people died or went missing at sea in 2024.
Hate is spreading fast. Harassment, threats, and attacks are rising against Muslims, Jews, Black and LGBTIQ people, online and offline.
Technology poses risks, but can offer solutions too. The EU introduced rules for online platforms and AI
to curb illegal content, disinformation, and discriminatory algorithms.
But rules alone do not protect rights .The EU must commit to stronger enforcement.
FRA calls for urgent action to:
- Ensure fair, transparent and safe elections
- Protect women and support victims of violence
- Implement fundamental rights monitoring at borders
- Tackle all forms of racism and hate
- Reinforce rights protection online
With Europe’s values at stake, protecting rights is non-negotiable.
