Keynote speech delivered by FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty on 10 September at a German Presidency of the Council of the EU conference on ‘Working together to fight antisemitism in Europe: Structures and strategies for a holistic approach’. He addressed the panel that explored monitoring antisemitism and developing prevention measures.
Ein Viertel der Roma und Fahrenden in Westeuropa, die in einigen der reichsten Länder der Welt leben, können sich grundlegende Dinge wie Heizung oder gesunde Lebensmittel nicht leisten. Bis zu ein Fünftel ihrer Kinder gehen hungrig zu Bett, so die Ergebnisse der aktuellen Umfrage der Agentur der Europäischen Union für Grundrechte (FRA). Weitverbreitete Diskriminierung in Verbindung mit vorzeitigem Schulabbruch führt bei vielen Angehörigen dieser Bevölkerungsgruppen zudem zu einem Mangel an Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten und weit verbreiteter Armut. Infolgedessen liegt die Lebenserwartung von Roma und Fahrenden 10 Jahre unter der Lebenserwartung der Allgemeinbevölkerung. Diese Ergebnisse sollten politische Maßnahmen auf nationaler und EU-Ebene vorantreiben und politische Entscheidungsträger dabei unterstützen, mit Roma und Fahrenden zusammenzuarbeiten, um Ausgrenzung und Armut zu bekämpfen.
Nationale Menschenrechtsinstitutionen (NMRI) sind von wesentlicher Bedeutung, um die Grundrechte in der gesamten EU zu schützen und zu fördern. Doch ihr volles Potenzial wird nach wie vor nicht richtig genutzt, wie ein neuer Bericht der Agentur der Europäischen Union für Grundrechte (FRA) zeigt. Der Bericht präsentiert Vorschläge, um Wirkkraft und Effizienz von NMRI zu steigern. Dazu gehören angemessene Ressourcen, umfassende Befugnisse und ein klares Mandat im Einklang mit den Pariser Grundsätzen der Vereinten Nationen.
