Keynote speech delivered by FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty on 10 September at a German Presidency of the Council of the EU conference on ‘Working together to fight antisemitism in Europe: Structures and strategies for a holistic approach’. He addressed the panel that explored monitoring antisemitism and developing prevention measures.
Alors qu’ils vivent dans certains des plus riches pays au monde, un quart des Roms et des Gens du voyage en Europe occidentale ne peuvent se permettre des produits de base tels que le chauffage ou une alimentation saine, et jusqu’à un cinquième de leurs enfants souffrent de la faim, d’après les résultats de la nouvelle enquête de l’Agence des droits fondamentaux de l’Union européenne (FRA). La discrimination endémique associée au décrochage scolaire entraîne également des perspectives d’emploi restreintes et à une pauvreté généralisée pour beaucoup d’entre eux. En conséquence, l’espérance de vie des Roms et des Gens du voyage est de 10 ans inférieure à celle de la population en général. Ces conclusions devraient guider les réponses politiques aux niveaux européen et national et aider les décideurs politiques à collaborer avec les Roms et les Gens du voyage dans la lutte contre l’exclusion et la pauvreté.
Les institutions nationales de défense des droits de l’homme (INDH) sont essentielles pour la protection et la promotion des droits fondamentaux dans l’UE, mais leur potentiel reste inexploité, selon un nouveau rapport de l’Agence des droits fondamentaux de l’UE (FRA). Ce dernier suggère les prochaines étapes pour renforcer l’impact et l’efficacité des INDH, telles que l’octroi de ressources adéquates, de pouvoirs importants et d’un mandat clair, conformément aux principes de Paris des Nations Unies.
