National asylum authorities discuss FRA monitoring guidance

FRA presented its updated guidance on monitoring fundamental rights during a Contact Committee meeting on the Asylum Procedure Regulation organised by the European Commission.

FRA described the nine building blocks intended to assist Member States when discussing parameters and safeguards for establishing or designating an independent national monitoring mechanism. 

The EU’s Screening Regulation tasked FRA with developing the guidance. The Regulation also requires Member States to provide an independent mechanisms to monitor fundamental rights compliance when screening new arrivals and assessing asylum claims at external borders. 

The meeting took place on 11 October.
