FRA joined Ukraine conference on human rights and local governance

FRA contributed online to the conference ‘Communities on the Path to the EU: Capacity, Resources and Human Rights’ in Lviv, Ukraine, that took place from 5 to 6 October. FRA presented its Framework for Human Rights Cities in the EU, highlighting how local authorities can embed human rights in everyday governance through foundations, structures and tools.

The discussion highlighted the importance of safeguarding human rights and access to essential services while responding to the growing needs of displaced people, veterans and other vulnerable groups. FRA’s contribution illustrated how a human rights-based approach can support local governance, a topic that was further explored during a dedicated workshop following the panel.

Other panellists included representatives from the European Union Regional Office, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office, the Lviv City Centre for Social Services, and the City of Zagreb.

The event brought together representatives of local and regional authorities, social services, EU institutions and the Ukrainian Ombudsperson’s Office to discuss Ukraine’s path towards EU integration and the protection of human rights locally.
