Marking 60 years of the international convention against racial discrimination

On 4 December, FRA spoke at the High-level Event: 60th Anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, organised by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The event commemorated six decades since the adoption of ICERD, reflecting on progress made and ongoing challenges in eliminating racial discrimination globally.

The focus was on the persistent gap between the Convention’s promise and the lived realities of millions, with a particular emphasis on structural, systemic, and intersectional discrimination.

FRA’s speech focused on the urgency of translating ICERD’s commitments into enforceable, data-driven, and participatory policies. FRA shared its most recent evidence on persistent discrimination against Roma and Travellers, people of African descent, and Muslim communities. It emphasised the need for robust equality data, targeted action, and multi-sectoral strategies.

FRA called for renewed commitment to dismantling structural racism and ensuring substantive equality.
