What?

In 2023, the Agency will launch its 3rd LGBTIQ survey. It will collect the experiences of discrimination and hate crime, as well as the views and challenges faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer people in 30 countries (EU, Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia) and 31 languages.

Why?

In 2019 and 2012, the Agency carried out previous surveys to address the lack of robust, statistical data on the life experiences of LGBTIQ people in the EU. In 2019, about 140,000 LGBTI people above 15 years old living in the EU shared their views and experiences. In 2012 there were over 93,000 LGBT respondents over 18 years old. It is the largest ever EU-wide LGBTI survey. The 2023 survey aims to assist the EU and Member States in their efforts to further strengthen legal and policy frameworks protecting the fundamental rights of LGBTIQ people. Comparing results from the previous surveys will help assess the effectiveness of policies and measures to combat discrimination and victimisation, and to promote equal participation in society.

How?

The EU LGBTIQ Survey will be carried out online in 2023. It will use the most appropriate means for reaching out to LGBTIQ people. FRA will cooperate with LGBTIQ civil society organisations and communities, social media channels and networks. FRA will reach out to LGBTIQ people of all ages and backgrounds, including those not affiliated to LGBTIQ community organisations, as well as those who are not able or wanting to be open about being lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer in their daily lives. FRA held consultations in 2022 with the European Commission, European and international organisations and institutions that work for, or promote, LGBTIQ equality and human rights when preparing for the survey. It also consulted EU and international academic experts and researchers to improve and fine-tune our research tools.

The results and findings will be published in 2024.
