The French Presidency of the EU invited FRA to the informal meeting of Justice Ministers in Lillle.

On 4 February, the Director will exchange views on tackling hate crime. He will address the fundamental rights dimension of hate crime and hate speech, taking into account developments relating to the proliferation of online hate.

The discussions will explore the willingness of Member States to provide a criminal response to combat hate online by extending the EU-crimes list. They will also cover cooperation between judicial authorities and platforms regarding online hate.

The debate will focus on the ways of protecting European citizens against growing hate crime and hate speech, in the wake of the pandemic.
