Welcome speech at FRA Symposium: Is Europe doing enough to protect fundamental rights?
A comprehensive human rights policy has to have evidence from the ground. We need solid data, and we need regular reporting on fundamental rights developments across all 28 EU member states. And it is precisely this data collection and comparison that form the basis of the Fundamental Rights Report we are presenting here today, and which will form the backdrop to our discussions.

Is Europe doing enough to protect fundamental rights?
Challenges to human rights are multiplying in the European Union, despite the strength of the legal framework we have built since the Second World War. To discuss the magnitude and nature of the challenges and develop solutions, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) is hosting a high-level symposium in cooperation with the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU.

FRA Director Michael O'Flaherty on FRA’s cooperation with civil society
FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty speaks about the role of civil society and the FRA’s mechanism for cooperation with civil society, the Fundamental Rights Platform. “A healthy civil society is vital for the protection and promotion of fundamental rights. (…) Without civil society, we are not able to achieve our goals, we are not able to deliver our results. (…) We can cooperate to ensure that our Europe of values remains and gets ever stronger.”

The future role of civil society in safeguarding and promoting fundamental rights in Europe
There is no arguing anymore that it is a matter of straightforward international human rights law that the state must foster a thriving civil society. So first and foremost, we are calling for respect for the law.

Bridging the gap between policies and reality: FRA’s Fundamental Rights Report 2017
Over the last decade, new fundamental rights laws and policies have been adopted and specialist institutions created. But fundamental rights challenges still remain and rights are under attack, underlining the lack of a fundamental rights culture across institutions and societies, as the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) reveals in its 2017 Fundamental Rights Report.

Reclaiming human rights in Europe: how to enhance democratic space? Counter-terrorism - freedom of expression - living together
Human rights are the ethical bricks and mortar on which Europe was rebuilt after the Second World War. They ensure that the state fulfils its task of protecting the wellbeing of its people, and at the same time they help to make sure that democracy does not turn into mob rule. ** CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY **
