FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty will present FRA’s upcoming report on protecting human rights defenders at risk to the European Parliament’s Human Rights subcommittee (DROI) on 28 June.

The report explains who human rights defenders are, which risks they face, and their needs if (temporarily) relocating to the EU.

It outlines the EU’s political and legal commitments to supporting human rights defenders. It explores the legal possibilities for human rights defenders to enter and stay in the EU as well as related obstacles.

FRA will publish the report on 5 July. It follows a request by the European Parliament to FRA for a study looking into the possibilities for human rights defenders from non-EU countries to enter and stay in EU Member States. This includes presenting good practices and ways to improve the situation.
