Climate justice for children

Climate experts and child rights experts across Europe, NGOs, practitioners, academics, and children gathered for a meeting of European the Network of Child-friendly Justice. They discussed the diverse situations and challenges children encounter due to the impact of climate change while seeking access to justice and legal remedies.

FRA spoke about the impact of climate change on children’s lives. It focused on its data on how children in vulnerable situations, such as Roma, are affected and the fundamental rights implications that brings.

Drawing from the Agency’s work on environmental protection, child protection and child-friendly justice, FRA highlighted procedural safeguards to be in place to ensure children’s equal access to and effective participation in judicial proceedings.

Speakers and participants agreed on moving towards environmental policies that address children’s unique situation, ensuring their participation and empowerment as well as learning more from their experiences through targeted research.

The Brussels meeting ran from 10 to 11 October.
