Fundamental rights training on automated border crossing

On 9 September, FRA gave online training on fundamental rights in connection with the use of biometrics at an event on vulnerabilities in automated border crossings at Rome Fiumicino airport.

Representatives of EU Member States and Schengen associated countries attended the meeting organised by Frontex.

The training included practical testing sessions of the automatic border crossing gates and self-service systems. Such systems have been set up in preparation of the coming into operation of the Entry Exit System (EES) on 12 October. This is part of efforts to digitalise the EU’s external borders.

FRA presented its upcoming fundamental rights guidance for border guards on the system. It highlights concerns in relation to data protection, child rights and access to remedies.
