On 22 and 23 April, FRA Director Sirpa Rautio will speak at the high-level Conference on the role of civil society in the protection of the rule of law. The Director will contribute to a panel discussion on the principle of civil society as an EU value.

The discussion will look at the state of civil society organisations in fundamental rights, rule of law and democracy in Europe. It will address how they can contribute to the rule of law and the main issues they face.

The Director will highlight why civic space is crucial for our democracies and offer several elements to support civil society organisations drawing on FRA’s civic space work. She will encourage the EU and Member States to foster a legal enabling environment, ensure an inclusive participation in decision-making, facilitate access to funding or protect civil society from threats and attacks.

The conference will also discuss the role of civil society in the upcoming democracy shield, protecting media and human rights defenders, academic freedom, the independence of legal professions and more.

The Polish Presidency of the Council in Warsaw organised the event.
