On 16 September, FRA took part in a virtual hearing organised by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) on deinstitutionalisation.
The hearing focused on the role of families as carers of people with disabilities.
It brought together people with disabilities, representatives of EU institutions and civil society to discuss how deinstitutionalisation could be given a new impetus in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
FRA presented findings from its research on deinstitutionalisation and the role of families. It noted the importance of fully involving families and of ensuring deinstitutionalisation gives people with disabilities the confidence they need.
