Many participants shared programmes and initiatives for civil society participation in law-making. These included thematic consultative bodies, citizens panels, national dialogues, dedicated funding, as well as digital platforms, guidance and tools also at local level.
FRA presented key benefits for Member States to cooperate with civil society in strengthening democratic resilience and protect the civic space. It stressed the need to support an enabling legal environment, foster participation in decision making and facilitate access to funding.
John Morijn, Professor at the University of Groningen and FRA Scientific Committee member shared his experience on how civil society can concretely contribute to strengthening the rule of law and democracy. He encouraged the Council and the Member States to commit to ensuring that NGOs can perform their activities in the public interest without fear and hurdles.
Key results from the discussion will feed the upcoming Polish Presidency High-Level Conference on ‘The Role of Civil Society in the Protection of the Rule of Law’ on 22-23 April and the Council work on the upcoming European Democracy Shield.
