The rule of law and why does it matter?

Explained.

Think of the rule of law
like a metro network.

At first glance, it is just a map
of coloured lines and stations.

But once you step on it, you realise it is
what keeps the whole city moving.

Imagine each line represents
the key principles of the rule of law.

Equality before the law.

Clear and predictable rules.

Limits on power.

Independent courts.

Checks and balances.

Separation of powers.

Most of the time
we do not think about them.

We simply expect the system to work.

When you sign a job contract,
rent a flat or challenge a fine.

You're stepping on to that network
and trusting

it will carry you fairly
and predictably to your destination.

Just like in a metro system,
all the lines are connected.

If one breaks down, the disruption spreads
and the system becomes unstable.

When all the principles are maintained
and clearly

signposted, the network flows.

People move through their lives
with confidence.

That is what the rule of law really is.

The infrastructure that allows society
to move forward. Together.
