Fundamental rights implications of the Entry-Exit System roundtable discussion

On 18 September, FRA hosted an online roundtable to discuss the findings of its project on the fundamental rights implications of the EU’s Entry Exit System.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will be an automated IT system for registering travellers from non-EU countries, both short-stay visa holders and visa exempt travellers, each time they cross an EU external border. The system is planned to become operational by the end of 2024.

In its research, FRA identified the following key fundamental rights concerns about the EES: ensuring human dignity, data protection and the best interests of the child and vulnerable people when taking biometric data at border crossing points.

Representatives of the European Commission, Frontex, Member State authorities, academia experts and national data protection authorities attended the meeting.
