EU Hackathon looks to combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish Life

On 29 -30 September, FRA took part in the #TikkunTech, an EU Hackathon on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish Life, the world’s largest gathering dedicated to the intersection of digital technologies and combating antisemitism.

More than 120 technology specialists, researchers, policymakers, civil society representatives and Jewish community experts gathered in Brussels for the first-ever TikkunTech EU Hackathon. The European Commission organised the hackathon.

Participants explored how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and large language models, can both contribute to and help address the spread of antisemitic narratives, conspiracy myths and hate speech.

Inspired by the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam ("repairing the world"), the hackathon challenged participants to transform innovative ideas into practical, rights-based tools and prototypes. Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants spent the two days designing, testing and refining concrete solutions.

The event also included dedicated work on assessing potential antisemitic bias in AI systems and identifying ways to strengthen safeguards and accountability in the development of new technologies.

By bringing together technical expertise, policy knowledge, civil society perspectives and lived experience, TikkunTech demonstrated how innovation can contribute to safer digital environments while supporting the flourishing of Jewish life across Europe.
